(Market Insider) – Apple has addressed user concerns about scratches spotted on the new iPhone 17 lineup, saying the marks were not actual damage but residue caused by worn MagSafe charging stands in its stores.
The iPhone 17 series, which went on sale September 19, has generally received strong reviews for durability. However, photos shared online showed visible marks on the backs of display models, particularly the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, with darker color variants appearing most affected around the MagSafe area.
Responding to 9to5Mac, Apple said inspections revealed the issue was linked to worn MagSafe charging docks still in use at some Apple Stores. According to the company, the blemishes were not scratches but residue from the stands that can be wiped away. Apple added it is replacing the worn chargers across retail locations.
Separately, durability tester JerryRigEverything pointed out that the edges of the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera module seemed prone to scratching, arguing that the anodized aluminum finish did not adhere well to sharp corners. Apple countered that the design is similar to the edges of its MacBook line, which has been thoroughly tested for durability. Minor abrasions over time, it added, are considered normal wear and tear.
Despite these concerns, industry experts continue to rate the iPhone 17 series highly for toughness. The new Ceramic Shield 2 glass offers significantly better scratch resistance compared to previous models, making the devices well protected under typical use conditions.
