Brussels accuses X of “deceptive design” and transparency failures under tough new tech rules

MARKET INSIDER- Elon Musk escalated his confrontation with Europe this weekend, calling for the European Union to be “abolished” after regulators fined his social media platform X €120 million ($140 million) for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The EU announced the penalty Friday following a two-year investigation, citing X’s allegedly deceptive blue checkmark design, lack of transparency in its advertising repository, and refusal to provide researchers with required access to public data. Musk initially responded with a one-word insult — “Bull––” — and on Saturday went further, arguing that sovereignty should return to individual European nations “so that governments can better represent their people.”

The backlash wasn’t limited to Musk. Senior U.S. officials sharply criticized the ruling, framing it as anti-American overreach. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the decision “an attack on all American tech platforms,” while the U.S. ambassador to the EU said the fine reflected “regulatory overreach targeting American innovation,” adding that the Trump administration would challenge measures it views as censorship or unfair burdens on U.S. companies.

EU officials defended the decision, saying the bloc must hold major platforms accountable when they undermine user rights. X now has 60 days to fix issues related to the blue checkmark and 90 days to submit compliance plans for ad transparency and data access. Failure to comply could trigger additional penalties.

The confrontation marks the DSA’s first major non-compliance ruling — and signals growing regulatory tension between Brussels, Silicon Valley, and Washington as Europe asserts a more aggressive stance in governing digital platforms.
