MARKET INSIDER – A widespread technical disruption, stemming from an issue with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has caused significant operational failures across major internet platforms globally, with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and brokerage firm Robinhood also experiencing serious outages that disrupted user trading.
According to the monitoring site Down Detector, a wave of service interruptions began around 8:00 AM BST (midnight PT), affecting a diverse range of platforms including Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva. The root cause has been initially identified as a significant failure within AWS, the cloud computing infrastructure that powers a vast portion of the modern internet.
Amazon’s service status page acknowledged a “elevated error rate” and “unusual latency” across multiple services simultaneously. Given that AWS is the world’s largest cloud provider, generating $108 billion in revenue last year and contributing the majority of Amazon’s profits, any internal system glitch has the potential to trigger a widespread cascading failure across thousands of companies globally—even those seemingly unrelated to Amazon’s retail or entertainment arms.
Financial Platforms Affected
The disruption extended beyond entertainment and productivity apps, hitting major financial platforms. Coinbase users reported an inability to log in, wallet errors, and frozen transactions. Robinhood experienced slow loading of market data, failure to execute trade orders, and an unresponsive website at times.
Both companies have confirmed that the issues were a direct consequence of the AWS system failure, which provides much of their data storage and processing infrastructure.
Coinbase moved quickly to reassure its user base, confirming that all user assets remain safe and secure on the underlying blockchain technology, despite the temporary access issues. Robinhood advised its customers to refrain from attempting any large or critical transactions until the system is fully restored and operating normally.
The incident underscores the growing reliance of the global financial technology sector on a handful of centralized cloud providers. For investors, the outage serves as a sharp reminder of the operational risks inherent in the digital infrastructure that underpins modern trading, particularly the potential for single-point-of-failure events to temporarily halt market access and trade execution. Investors will be closely monitoring how rapidly these crucial financial platforms can fully mitigate the risk and restore seamless service.
