Netflix Shuts Down ‘Squid Game: Unleashed’ Studio Amid Gaming Strategy Pivot

by Dean Dougn

MARKET INSIDER – Netflix (NFLX.O) has opted to shut down one of its owned game development studios, Boss Fight Entertainment, the team behind the mobile title Squid Game: Unleashed. This move signals a strategic shift within the streaming giant’s nascent video gaming unit as it continues to explore revenue diversification.

The Studio Closure and Context

The closure of Boss Fight Entertainment, which Netflix acquired in 2022, was confirmed via LinkedIn posts by former executives on Thursday. David Rippy, the co-founder and former CEO, expressed gratitude for the time at Netflix, while David Luehmann, a director of game development, confirmed the studio’s decade-long run had ended.

This decision comes even as Netflix’s Co-CEO Greg Peters recently highlighted Squid Game: Unleashedduring the company’s earnings call as a prime example of the narrative-driven titles it intends to create based on its original hit shows.

Despite the studio’s closure, its two main titles, Netflix Stories and Squid Game: Unleashed, will remain available on the platform for users.

The Strategy Shift and Investor Takeaway

Netflix’s gaming venture is a key component of its broader strategy to diversify revenue streams beyond subscription fees, alongside its expansion into advertising. This latest action suggests a renewed focus and perhaps a consolidation of resources under its new President of Games, Alain Tascan, named last year.

The company’s new gaming strategy will reportedly prioritize specific genres: party, narrative, kids, and mainstream games. The closure of an acquired studio, even one associated with a high-profile IP like Squid Game, indicates Netflix is likely streamlining its development capacity to focus on internal efficiencies and maximizing returns from its core intellectual property.

For investors, this action should be viewed less as an abandonment of the gaming initiative and more as a course correction—a common occurrence in the high-risk, high-reward video game development space. The focus will now be on how Netflix leverages the remaining internal and external studios to execute on its stated goal of creating highly engaging, IP-driven content that boosts subscriber retention and engagement.
