Swedish electric automaker debuts AI-powered driving assist that uses onboard cameras and Google integration for real-time lane guidance.

STOCKHOLM — Swedish EV maker Polestar has unveiled a breakthrough in in-car navigation: its new Polestar 4 will be the first electric vehicle in the world to integrate Google Maps’ lane-level guidance directly into the driver’s display.

The cutting-edge feature uses Google’s AI-driven mapping technology to detect the vehicle’s exact lane position in real time. By analyzing road elements such as lane markings and traffic signs through the Polestar 4’s front cameras, the system provides visual and audio alerts to help drivers change lanes safely and avoid missed exits — especially in multi-lane highways and complex urban intersections.

Drivers will see each available lane clearly marked on the digital instrument cluster, along with dynamic guidance for optimal positioning. The system aims to reduce driver stress and confusion during heavy traffic or high-speed merges, enhancing both comfort and safety.

“This innovation continues Polestar’s human-centric UX strategy,” said Sid Odedra, Polestar’s Director of User Interface and User Experience. “By simplifying lane navigation and preventing last-second maneuvers, we’re making driving both safer and more intuitive.”

The direct navigation feature will roll out first to Polestar 4 owners in the U.S. and Sweden via an over-the-air (OTA) software update in the coming months, before expanding to other global markets.

According to Andrew Foster of Google Maps, this marks the latest chapter in the partnership that began with the Polestar 2 in 2020, the first car to debut Google’s built-in infotainment software. “Now, Polestar 4 becomes the first to integrate our AI-powered lane guidance, helping drivers navigate with confidence,” he said.

Launched in late October, the Polestar 4 combines high performance and practicality, with a starting price of $56,400 in the U.S. Available in single- and dual-motor configurations, the EV delivers an impressive range of up to 590 km (367 miles) on a full charge.

Polestar, originally a Volvo performance division, is now a global EV brand backed by Volvo (16%), Geely (22%), and billionaire investor Li Shufu’s private fund (44%), with the remaining shares held by public shareholders.

As the first EV to bring Google Maps’ real-time lane-level navigation to life, the Polestar 4 cements its place at the frontier of AI-assisted driving, signaling how deep tech integration is reshaping the user experience behind the wheel.
