Fifteen next-generation trains to enter service by year-end, cutting travel times and boosting passenger comfort across one of Russia’s busiest suburban lines.
MOSCOW, November 9 (Market Insider) — Moscow is fast-tracking upgrades to its Yaroslavl railway corridor, announcing that by the end of 2025, 15 new “Ivolga 4.0” electric trains will be in operation — part of a sweeping modernization plan launched in partnership with Russian Railways (RZD) and suburban operator CPPK.
The initiative aims to transform daily commuting between Moscow and Yaroslavl, one of the busiest routes in the capital region, by improving speed, comfort, and capacity.
“The upgrade of the Yaroslavl route will allow even more residents and visitors of the capital to enjoy fast and comfortable transportation,” the Moscow Transport Department said in a statement.
Comfort, Capacity, and Modern Design
The new Ivolga 4.0 models — built by the Tver Carriage Works, part of the Transmashholding group — offer significant advancements over previous generations.
20% more passenger space and 45% wider aisles, easing congestion during rush hours. 15% faster boarding and disembarking thanks to redesigned door systems. Advanced noise insulation, climate control, and real-time digital displays for smoother, quieter travel. Enhanced accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility.
The fleet expansion will reduce the average train age fivefold, from nearly 18 years to just 3.5 years, cutting maintenance costs and boosting reliability. Once fully implemented, the system will be able to transport over 300,000 passengers daily.
By 2030, Moscow plans to introduce 92 new train units in total under its rail renewal program.
Implementation and Technical Upgrades
Preparations for the rollout include comprehensive safety inspections, system calibration, and specialized training for locomotive engineers.
A new maintenance division in Pushkino has also been launched to oversee ongoing technical operations and ensure real-time diagnostics of the Ivolga fleet.
To support higher capacity, additional tracks between Moscow and Pushkino have been built, reducing waiting times by one-third. Meanwhile, a new transport hub in Rostokino connects the Yaroslavl line with the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), creating smoother transfers across the city’s expanding urban rail network.
A Modern Rail Vision for Greater Moscow
The Yaroslavl upgrade is part of a wider vision to create a fully integrated, high-capacity rail system around Moscow. Alongside the MCC and MCD (Moscow Central Diameters) projects, the Ivolga expansion underscores Russia’s push to replace aging rolling stock, reduce congestion, and promote greener, electric-powered mobility.
When complete, the upgraded Yaroslavl corridor will offer faster journeys, fewer delays, and a world-class commuter experience, positioning Moscow’s rail infrastructure among the most advanced in Europe.
